Location guide for cleared cyber and SIGINT careers

The Best Locations for Cleared Cyber and SIGINT Jobs

The job offer matters. The local market matters more than most candidates realize.

View Cyber Intelligence Roles

You can build a cleared cyber or SIGINT career in a lot of places. But not all locations are equal. Some places have a few cleared jobs. Other places are true centers of gravity.

Location affects salary, commute, housing, contract options, promotion speed, and how many times you can change roles without leaving the mission. If you move to the right cleared market, one role can turn into a career path. If you move to the wrong place, one contract loss can become a relocation problem.

The core question: where does the work actually happen?

The IC Centers of Gravity

The biggest cleared cyber and SIGINT markets are built around mission infrastructure: major bases, cryptologic centers, cyber commands, service components, combat support agencies, and contractor ecosystems.

The main hubs candidates should understand are:

  • Fort Meade, Maryland.
  • Fort Gordon, Georgia.
  • San Antonio, Texas.
  • Hawaii.
  • Utah.

There are other important locations too, including Colorado, Alaska, Northern Virginia, Florida, and overseas postings. But if you are looking for the main cleared cyber and SIGINT job markets, start with the hubs above. NSA's careers site names Fort Meade as headquarters and lists cryptologic centers and other locations in Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Texas, Alaska, and Utah. NSA

Fort Meade, Maryland: The Epicenter

If you are serious about NSA, Cyber Command, SIGINT, DNEA, cyber intelligence, and cleared technical analysis, Fort Meade is the center of the map. That does not mean every good job is there. But Fort Meade has the deepest cleared job market.

NSA headquarters is at Fort George G. Meade, located between Baltimore and Washington, DC. The Fort Meade Alliance notes that the installation is home to more than 115 government agencies and organizations, including NSA. Fort Meade Alliance

Fort Meade also has a heavy cyber footprint, including U.S. Cyber Command, NSA, DISA, Joint Force Headquarters Department of Defense Information Network, Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command, and Fleet Cyber Command. That is why Fort Meade cleared jobs are everywhere.

What Fort Meade Is Best For

  • SIGINT, DNEA, cyber intelligence, network analysis, and exploitation analysis.
  • Cyber mission support, software roles tied to classified missions, and systems engineering.
  • Security engineering, compliance and ISSO roles, classified data analysis, and mission management.

The market is deep because the customer base is deep. If one program ends, there may be another nearby. That is the advantage.

The Cost of Living and Housing Reality

The Fort Meade area is not cheap. It is not as expensive as the middle of DC, but it is not a low cost market either. Candidates often look at the salary first and forget to model housing, commute, parking, tolls, gas, and quality of life.

Common areas people consider include:

  • Odenton, Severn, Hanover, Laurel, Columbia, Crofton, and Gambrills.
  • Annapolis, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Bowie, and Baltimore suburbs.

Odenton is convenient but can be expensive. Columbia has strong quality of life but can add commute time depending on gate and traffic. Annapolis is great if you want the lifestyle, but the commute can wear on you. Bowie can work, but you need to test the commute. Baltimore area options can be more affordable, but the drive depends heavily on timing.

Do not rent or buy based on map distance. Drive the commute at the actual time you would report.

The Commute Reality

The Fort Meade commute is route, gate, shift, and timing, not just mileage. A person living ten miles away may have a worse commute than someone living farther away if the route is bad. The difference between reporting at 0600 and 0830 can be huge.

Before accepting a role, ask where you will report, what gate you are likely to use, what schedule is expected, and whether parking or shuttle arrangements matter.

Fort Gordon, Georgia: Growth and Lifestyle

Fort Gordon is one of the most important Army cyber locations. The naming has been confusing. The installation was renamed Fort Eisenhower, but Army history pages state that a June 10, 2025 Army General Order renamed it Fort Gordon for Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon. The current Army Cyber School page lists Fort Gordon, Georgia as the location. Cyber CoE

For search purposes, candidates still use both terms: Fort Gordon cyber jobs and Fort Eisenhower cyber jobs. For current use, Fort Gordon is the safer name.

The Army Cyber Center of Excellence says it is the force modernization proponent for cyberspace operations, signal and communications networks, information services, and electronic warfare. Cyber CoE

What Fort Gordon Is Best For

  • Army cyber, signal, electronic warfare, cyber training, and cyber operations support.
  • Network operations, instructor roles, technical training roles, and military cyber transition.
  • Contractor roles tied to Army cyber and signal missions.

Fort Gordon can be a great move. Just understand that it is a more focused market than Fort Meade. Ask whether the role is on a stable contract, whether the company is prime or subcontractor, how many related programs exist nearby, and what happens if the contract changes.

San Antonio, Texas: Air Force Cyber and NSA Texas

San Antonio is a serious cyber and intelligence hub. NSA lists NSA Texas in San Antonio, and the 16th Air Force fact sheet describes 16th Air Force as supporting the Intelligence Community and Air Force, serving as the Air Force component to U.S. Cyber Command, supporting NSA and Central Security Service as the Service Cryptologic Component, and executing SIGINT missions. 16th Air Force

San Antonio is especially important for Air Force cyber, intelligence, ISR, SIGINT, cyber operations, defensive cyber, and information warfare.

What San Antonio Is Best For

  • Air Force cyber, SIGINT, ISR, and cyber intelligence.
  • Cybersecurity service provider work, defensive cyber operations, and network defense.
  • Security operations and technical support to Air Force and NSA missions.

San Antonio can give candidates more house for the money than the DMV or Hawaii. The commute depends heavily on where you live and where you report. Lackland and the broader Joint Base San Antonio footprint can create very different commute patterns depending on the exact facility.

Hawaii: Mission Value, Lifestyle Cost

Hawaii is one of the most attractive locations on paper. It is also one of the most expensive. NSA Hawaii is located in Honolulu, according to NSA's location page. NSA

The mission can be strong, especially for Pacific focused intelligence, SIGINT, cyber support, language, regional analysis, and operational support tied to Indo Pacific priorities. But Hawaii is not a normal relocation. Housing, groceries, shipping, and flights to the mainland are expensive.

If you get a Hawaii offer, do not compare salary to your current city. Compare salary to Hawaii costs. Ask about relocation assistance, cost allowances where applicable, parking, commute, work schedule, and whether the company has local support.

Utah: Bluffdale, Draper, and the Salt Lake Area

NSA says NSA Utah is located in Bluffdale and Draper, both outside Salt Lake City. NSA

Utah can be attractive because it offers mountain access, a strong outdoor culture, a growing technology market, and a lower intensity environment than the DMV for many people. But the cleared job market is more specialized. It is not Fort Meade.

Utah can be a strong fit if the role aligns well with your skills and you want the lifestyle. It may not be the best fit if your main goal is maximum cleared job density.

Do You Have to Live in Maryland?

No. But if you want the largest cleared cyber and SIGINT market, Maryland is hard to avoid. Fort Meade is the deepest market because of NSA, Cyber Command, DISA, Navy cyber, Marine cyber, and the contractor ecosystem around them.

You can build a strong career in Georgia, Texas, Hawaii, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, Northern Virginia, and other locations depending on your role. The better question is how much career optionality you want without moving again.

Can You Work Remote in SIGINT or Cyber?

Sometimes. But not as often as candidates hope. If the work is classified, expect to be in a secure facility. GSA's SCIF policy says classified information and material may only be handled by someone with the right clearance, need to know, and inside a GSA controlled SCIF. GSA

OPM's telework guide also states that classified information may not be taken to or accessed at telework sites. OPM

Remote cleared jobs exist, but they are usually in unclassified support work, proposal work, software development on unclassified systems, documentation, project coordination, training, open source work, cloud support where allowed, compliance work, or hybrid roles with a mix of classified and unclassified duties.

  • Is the work classified?
  • How many days require SCIF access?
  • Is the role fully remote or partly remote?
  • Is the remote work customer approved, temporary, or written into the role?
  • Can the policy change?

The Best Location Depends on Your Career Stage

If you are early career

Choose the place with the most learning and role density. For many candidates, that means Fort Meade. You want access to mentors, mission context, contract options, and technical growth.

If you are military transition

Fort Gordon and San Antonio can be strong if your background aligns with Army cyber, signal, Air Force cyber, ISR, or security operations.

If you are mid career

Look for market depth and compensation. Fort Meade usually gives the most movement. San Antonio and Fort Gordon can be strong if your skills match the local mission.

If you are senior

Choose based on role, customer, compensation, and lifestyle. At senior levels, the exact role matters more than the city.

If you value lifestyle first

Look closely at Fort Gordon, San Antonio, Utah, and Hawaii. But be honest about job density. Lifestyle matters. So does what happens if the contract changes.

The Bottom Line

You do not have to live in Maryland to build a cleared cyber or SIGINT career. But you need to understand where the work is concentrated. Fort Meade is still the biggest center of gravity. Fort Gordon is a major Army cyber and signal hub. San Antonio is a serious Air Force cyber and NSA Texas market. Hawaii and Utah can be excellent if the mission and lifestyle fit your goals.

Remote work exists, but classified work still pulls people into secure facilities. Before you move, do not just ask about salary. Ask about commute, housing, SCIF time, contract stability, local job depth, and what happens if the role changes.
